Bates enjoy the "Rec" track
Jul 31, 2013, 12:57 pm

Bates Cottages arrived at the Rec for their 1st team fixture against the Rugger Boys on Saturday 29th June 2013 and to our surprise they decided to bowl after winning the toss on what proved to be a very good batting track. The word of the captain ringing in the players ears “Bat in Partnerships” seemed to have an effect as the first wicket fell on 42 in the 12th over, Vice-captain Midge came to the crease and built partnerships with M. Tanney who scored 30, P. Milburn 18, and Rob Clark 20 before Midge fell for 58. E ended 223 for 9 off 50 overs.

Bates lost their 1st wicket on 6 in the 3rd over, however that brought Ross Symington to the crease who batted very well and looked in no trouble at all he was then joined by M. Walton who together put on 141 runs as a partnership and this took the game away from the Rugger boys. Symington fell on 95 bowled by M. Tanney and Walton was caught on 84 by L. Tanney and bowled by his dad Bernie. Bates eventually finished 227 for 6 to win the game, with 14 overs to spare.

Bates 29 points and Ash 8 points.

1st's Back down to earth
Jul 26, 2013, 12:57 pm

After a good win the week before, the 1st team travelled to Warkworth looking for a repeat performance. On an overcast and cloudy day we lost the toss and were put into bat. Our openers got into a muddle early on and this resulted in Dean Hardy being run out on 2, once again a steady fall of wickets and we were looking in poor shape, only Matty Tanney who top scored on 28, P. Milburn 22, L Tanney and his dad Bernie who both scored 19 are the only ones who managed to get a score in double figures, leaving us all out on 127.

Once again we were left with us looking for our bowlers to pull off a miracle, only Cory Milburn and Matty Tanney who both took 2 wickets each managed to get into Warkworth’s batting, what a fall from grace from the previous week.

Warkworth 30 points and Ash 4 points.

Eventually Partnerships
Jul 26, 2013, 12:44 pm

The Rugger boys entertained Kirkley CC at the Rec on 15th June 2013, on a warm day on what looked like a good deck, we won the toss and decided to bat. For once we built a few partnerships and we eventually finished all out on 178 which looked a little low on that track. S. Maddison who scored 39 and P. Milburn who scored 24 had a good partnership and steadied the ship after a few early wickets fell. Scott was ably supported by Bernie Tanney who finished 22 not out. Kirkley bowled 41 extras which supported our cause.

After a pep talk from our captain we set about bowling a tight line and length to the Kirkley boys and this worked at treat, bowling them all out for 85 a great effort. Scott Maddison bowled a great spell of off spin bowling taking 5 wickets for 10 runs in 4.5 overs and he was supported by Craig Jobson who took 4 wickets for 23 runs in his 5 overs.

Ashington Rugby Cricket Club won by 93 runs taking 29 points and Kirkley taking 5 points a much needed result for the Rugger boys on home soil.

1st Visit Clara Vale
Jul 26, 2013, 12:33 pm

8th June saw our 1st Team travel to Clara Vale; we lost the toss and were put into bat on a green wicket. Matty Tanney was the only one of our batters who got to grip with the bowling and the wicket he scored a brisk 53 before falling to Z. Ahmed caught by S. Alvi, only 3 others managed to get into double figures. Our innings finished with our score on 145.

Clara’s opening bat N. Iqbal (DC) set about the score with gusto he plundered 7 fours in his total of 28, once he fell our bowlers got into the Clara’s batters with Matty Tanney taking 4 wickets off his 10.4 overs and Cory Milburn bowling quick and aggressively also took 4 for from his 13 overs in one spell, he had the Clara’s batters jumping around in the crease, only S. Alvi managed to get going with him falling on 34. Clara just got home with them being 8 wickets down, how we missed star opening bowler D. Greaves. Who we are sure would have helped our cause. So close but not good enough.

Clara 27 points and Ash 6 points.

Old boy returns
Jul 25, 2013, 1:27 pm

Blyth CC were the visitors to the Rec on 1st June 2013, with old boy Chris Harwood coming back to his old club for the first time since he left this season. We were asked to bat by Blyth and Mr Ebdale did the damage with his swing bowling he bowled a very good spell taking 6 wickets for 17 runs off his 12 overs just about unplayable or should I say that we did not have the answer to this fine spell of bowling. We ended all out 72.

Blyth did not have it all their way as young Cory Milburn set about them with a fine spell of quick bowling he removed Blyth’s 3 main men Dent for 8, Lawrence for 6 and old boy Harwood for 25 all of these players were clean bowled his spell was 3 wickets from 9 overs for 26 runs, once again the batsmen need to build partnerships to give the bowlers something to bowl at.

Blyth 30 points and Ash 1 point.

Blagdon away for the 1st Team
Jul 25, 2013, 1:16 pm

1st travelled to Blagdon Park on 25th May 2013 looking for a better showing than the week before, we won the toss on a damp wicket we inserted the home team hoping for quick wickets, however Shaun Collins opened up and he attached our bowling and he stayed at the crease until the total reached 174 when we removed him on 92, Blagdon ended up 255 for 8. Our bowlers S. Maddison took 3 for 56 off 13 overs and Cory Milburn bowled quick and took 2 for 40 off his 12 overs, Bernie took 2 wickets for 55 off 13 overs.

Once again we did not build any partnerships and ended all out for 128 and 40 of those were extra’s very disappointing showing by the Rugger boys.

Blagdon 30 points and Ash 5 points.

Tanney 12 and P. Milburn 27. Paul Rutherford did the damage with his slow spin bowling he took 6 for 18 runs off his 12.3 overs, this after Bedlington’s quick’s opened up for 19 overs.

Bedlington reached our score of 103 with the loss of only 1 wicket.

Bedlington 30 points Ashington Rugby CC 1 point.
